A European Convoy departed from Rome today, carrying five tons of essential medicines to Cuba in a solidarity mission that directly responds to the U.S. energy blockade against the country.
In a powerful act of solidarity, a European Convoy departed from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport today, March 17, bound for Havana, carrying five tons of essential medicines.
This mobilization represents a forceful denunciation and practical response to the exacerbated energy blockade unilaterally imposed on Cuba by the United States, which organizers describe as an attempt to suffocate the island economically.

Comprising over 100 representatives from a vast international network, the group was seen off by Cuban Ambassador to Italy, Jorge Luis Cepero. Ambassador Cepero lauded the gesture as a profound symbol of firm European rejection of the policies of economic asphyxiation against the island nation.
Text reads: “European convoy departs from Italy heading to Cuba, with 5 tons of medicines for the health system @MINSAPCuba. Thank you! to all the people and organizations that have made this gesture of solidarity with the Cuban people and their heroic resistance possible.”
The mission boasts unprecedented political and social support, uniting more than 50 associations from various countries including France, Spain, Germany, Türkiye, Algeria, and Morocco. This broad coalition underscores a widespread international condemnation of the long-standing sanctions.
Among the passengers on the Neos airline Boeing 787, carrying the invaluable cargo to the Caribbean country, are four members of the European Parliament, alongside delegates from diverse political parties and powerful trade union organizations, driven by a shared commitment to provide direct assistance to the Cuban health system.
The core of this humanitarian shipment is a substantial cargo of five tons of essential medicines, with an estimated value of 500,000 euros (approximately $577,000 U.S. dollars). These supplies are deemed vital for patient care in Cuba’s health centers, which have been significantly impacted by the economic restrictions and the challenges posed by the blockade.
In addition to the physical supplies, the mobilization successfully raised over 45,000 euros (approximately $52,000 U.S. dollars) in record time, thanks to the contributions of 700 individual donors.
This financial support will further bolster Cuba’s capacity to acquire necessary resources for its healthcare infrastructure. Moreover, the Government of Spain has joined this collective effort, announcing additional shipments of medical products and food aid valued at one million euros (approximately $1,154,000 U.S. dollars), signaling a reinforced commitment to humanitarian assistance.
Cuba Is Not Alone
Organizers of the Convoy vehemently denounced that the situation in Cuba has become critical following an Executive Order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump on last January 29. This order, they assert, explicitly seeks to impede the arrival of fuel to the island, with the deliberate aim of provoking a humanitarian crisis, destabilizing the country, and ultimately forcing a regime change.
This aggressive posture from Washington has severely exacerbated existing challenges, particularly impacting Cuba’s energy sector and, consequently, its ability to provide basic services.
Against this backdrop of heightened pressure and scarcity, the arrival of these medical supplies represents a crucial relief for the Cuban people.
As stated by Anna Camposampiero, director of Foreign Relations of Communist Refoundation, this profound mobilization serves as clear evidence that, despite the escalating pressures from Washington, “Cuba is not alone.”
The collective action of European civil society, political figures, and labor organizations sends a powerful message of solidarity and resistance against what many perceive as an unjust and punitive blockade.
This mission underscores the continued international pushback against unilateral sanctions and highlights the enduring spirit of cooperation in the face of adversity, reinforcing global support for the Cuban nation.
